If you watch sport on mobile data, the question that matters is simple: how much of your allowance will this match cost? The answer is more predictable than most people assume, and once you can estimate it you can make sensible choices instead of anxious ones.

The basic arithmetic

Data usage is just bitrate multiplied by time. A stream running at 5 megabits per second for one hour uses roughly 2.25 gigabytes, because there are 3,600 seconds in an hour and eight bits in a byte. The formula is:

Gigabytes per hour = Mbps × 0.45

That constant of 0.45 is worth memorising. It converts any bitrate straight into an hourly cost, and it works for any stream on any service.

What each quality level costs per hour

  • 360p — about 0.4 to 0.5 GB per hour
  • 480p — about 0.7 to 1.1 GB per hour
  • 720p — about 1.4 to 2.3 GB per hour
  • 1080p — about 2.7 to 3.6 GB per hour
  • 1080p at 60fps — about 3.6 to 5.4 GB per hour

Sport lands at the upper end of every band. Fast motion, panning cameras and crowd detail are expensive to encode, so a match consistently costs more per hour than a drama at the same resolution.

What that means for a real fixture

Translating the per-hour figures into actual viewing:

  • A football match — about two hours including half-time and build-up. At 720p that is roughly 3 to 4.5 GB; at 1080p, 5.5 to 7 GB.
  • A T20 cricket innings — around 90 minutes. At 720p, roughly 2 to 3.5 GB.
  • A full T20 match — around 3.5 hours with the innings break. At 720p, roughly 5 to 8 GB.
  • A one-day international — around 8 hours. At 720p that is 11 to 18 GB, and at 1080p it can exceed 25 GB.
  • A full day of a Test match — around 6 hours of play but longer if you leave it running. Comfortably 10 to 20 GB at 720p.

The cricket figures explain why so many people exhaust a monthly allowance in a single weekend. A limited-overs match watched in full at high quality can consume more data than a fortnight of ordinary browsing, messaging and music.

Screen size changes the sensible choice

This is the most useful and most ignored point. On a phone screen of six or seven inches held at normal distance, the visible difference between 720p and 1080p is marginal. Your eye cannot resolve the extra detail at that size and distance. On a 55-inch television it is obvious.

So the practical rule is straightforward: match quality to screen, not to habit. Watching 1080p on a phone over mobile data roughly doubles your usage in exchange for detail you largely cannot see. Dropping to 720p on a phone is close to free in perceptual terms and halves the cost.

There is one genuine exception. Cricket at wide angles puts a very small ball against a large green field, and the ball can become genuinely hard to track at lower resolutions. Many viewers find 480p acceptable for football but frustrating for cricket. Judge by sport, not by a single blanket setting.

Practical ways to cut usage

Set quality manually before you start

Automatic quality selection optimises for picture, not for your bill. It will climb to the highest level your connection sustains, which on good mobile coverage means the most expensive option. Setting quality manually at the start is the single biggest saving available.

Audio-only for the parts that do not need pictures

Long formats have long stretches where nothing is happening. Radio commentary uses well under 100 MB per hour — a fraction of one percent of a video stream. Switching to audio during a rain delay, an innings break or a slow session, then returning to video when it matters, can halve the cost of a day's cricket.

Do not leave it running

A stream left playing to an empty room costs exactly as much as one being watched. Most data disasters are not from watching too much; they are from forgetting to stop. If your player has a sleep timer, use it.

Watch the second screen

Streaming while also refreshing a live scores page, a social feed and a chat app adds up. The video dominates, but background apps on a phone can add several hundred megabytes over a long match.

Use Wi-Fi for the long formats

For anything over three hours, find Wi-Fi. The arithmetic is simply not in your favour otherwise, and no quality setting makes an eight-hour stream cheap.

How to check what you actually used

Estimates are useful but your own numbers are better. On Android, open Settings, then Network & internet, then Data usage, and look at per-app figures for the current cycle. Note the number before a match and after, and you will have a precise figure for your device, your app and your usual quality setting.

Do this once and you will never have to guess again. Real measurements from your own viewing beat any general table, including this one.

A note on "unlimited" plans

Most unlimited mobile plans are not unlimited in the way sports viewing tests. Many apply a fair-use threshold after which speeds are reduced, and several cap video quality outright regardless of remaining allowance. If your stream refuses to go above 480p on mobile but works fine on Wi-Fi, a plan-level video cap is the likely explanation rather than any fault in the app or your signal.
